An award winning, London based wedding photographer, Kaushik Bathia has spent more than twenty five years photographing weddings, and travels to Cardiff and right across South Wales. We look for the connections between people, a parent watching from the side or friends laughing after the ceremony, because those are the pictures you go back to. Cardiff City Hall, opened in 1906 in Portland stone, is licensed for marriage ceremonies, with a Council Chamber seating 94, and Cardiff Castle, which hosts weddings for around 30 to 100 guests, has its Burges-decorated Banqueting Hall licensed too; civil, religious and multicultural weddings are all covered. If a Cardiff day runs long we would simply adjust the portraits, and travel from Northwood, with any overnight stay, is quoted in writing before you book.
Marrying at Cardiff Castle hands a photographer two entirely different looks in one place: the medieval castle outside and the Victorian Gothic revival mansion within, where the interiors are dark and richly patterned and demand careful exposure. Better still, Bute Park, a Grade I listed park with an arboretum of over 3,000 catalogued trees, lies directly behind it, so the couple portraits and the big family groups can happen without anyone getting into a car. Roath Park and its lake are the alternative when the light is flat and open water helps. Holland House Hotel on Newport Road and the event rooms at Cardiff City Stadium in Canton are options for a reception, and guests arriving by train can use Cardiff Central or Cardiff Queen Street. The grand civic buildings around Cathays Park give clean, symmetrical backdrops if the schedule allows a walk.

The licence picks your room before you do. Approval for a civil ceremony attaches to one named room, not to the building around it. That is why a couple who fall for a courtyard end up married in the panelled office off it. Establish which single room the approval sits on, then look at that room honestly: where its windows are, which way they face, and what time of day you would be standing in it.
Everything after that is negotiable, which is the useful part. A city-centre wedding can put the ceremony, the photographs and the dinner inside a single walk, since parkland and a mainline station both sit centrally. Venues within reach include Cardiff Castle, Cardiff City Stadium and Holland House Hotel. Ask whether the licensed room later becomes the dining room, because if so, somebody has to turn it around, and that turnaround is either your portrait hour or it is not.

From the vows to the first dance
Legally, it is over quickly. Ten minutes of legal wording, two signatures, and a walk back down. Coverage therefore gets decided before it starts rather than found during it, since there is no later half in which to recover a missed frame. We settle standing positions with the registrar beforehand, along with whether we may move while the vows are spoken, then take those ten minutes on two cameras from two angles so nothing rests on one exposure.
Groups are the day's other fixed cost. A dozen combinations at four minutes apiece eats the better part of an hour, straight out of the drinks you paid for, so we trim that list with you well before the day, then run it against a wall rather than into open sun. A first dance reverses the problem, and so do the speeches: one moves and is badly lit, the other sits still and is badly lit, and they want different lenses and different assumptions about noise.
