In the darbar hall we move slowly and only along the sides, so the granthi and your elders are never disturbed by a camera crossing the room. Most guests catch only parts of the day, so we would record all of it: the mehndi night, the baraat, the sangat seated for the Anand Karaj, langar served to everyone alike, and a reception that might be at Custom House in the Barbican or at Boringdon Hall in Plympton. The doli often comes quickly once the reception winds down, so a camera stays ready by the door, whether the evening ends in the Barbican or out in Plympton. Nothing is bolted on afterwards. Second photographer, pre-wedding shoot and album are all discussed at the quote stage, as is the travel to Devon, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.
The size of the sangat changes how the ragis and the palla are framed, so we ask about numbers early. Kirtan is photographed quietly from one side, heads covered and shoes off throughout. Once the four laavan are complete and ardas is done, the celebration can move to Custom House or Ocean Studios on the waterfront. Langar photographs best in the serving line rather than posed. Trains into Plymouth station on North Road bring guests in through the day.

Two buildings. Two quite separate jobs. The awkward part is the seam where one hands over to the other. Morning happens inside a place you cannot alter: seating fixed, platform fixed, and whatever daylight the original builders let in. We adapt to all of it and change none of it. By afternoon the relationship inverts, and the room becomes something we are free to light exactly as the pictures need it lit.
Waterfront reception rooms behave nothing like a morning hall. Custom House, Ocean Studios, Boringdon Hall Hotel: a former port building carries height and hard stone; a studio conversion carries flat pale walls; a country hotel carries dark timber under warm bulbs. Each wants a different rig walked in. Ask what hour access starts, because everything we set up has to fit inside that window.

Inside the darbar hall on a Plymouth wedding morning
A congregation seated on carpet puts every face far below the eyeline of anybody upright. So the carpet is where we work as well, angled in from one side, long glass, flash switched off entirely. Covered heads, shoes left outside: that is simply how the room runs, and nobody has to prompt us about it. Palla is the single physical thread running through it all, and keeping that visible settles our angle before any other question gets raised at all.
Four laavan, four circuits, and the trap is four frames nobody could put back in order. Between them we alter height, then side, and let the sangat supply the difference: who stood up, who is singing, who has stopped watching. Ardas draws it closed. Milni belongs earlier and is pure reaction, two families colliding in a doorway, so arriving ahead of your own relatives is the difference between holding it and hearing about it.

Counting laavan is not the skill. Anticipating that the third quickens, that people rise before the fourth, that the ragis shift tempo as it closes, is what puts a camera in place beforehand. Very little about a Sikh morning catches us out, and nothing needs chasing across a hall.

- Plymouth Hoe is a Grade II registered historic park overlooking Plymouth Sound, with a large grassed area, a sensory garden, memorials and a wide promenade, and is linked with Sir Francis Drake's legendary game of bowls before the Armada. 2
- Royal William Yard in Stonehouse, built between 1826 and 1835 to designs by Sir John Rennie as the Royal Navy's main victualling depot, has Grade I and II listed buildings now used for apartments, offices, restaurants and cultural spaces including Ocean Studios. 3
- Boringdon Hall at Colebrook, Plympton (PL7 4DP), a 16th-century manor house hotel with a Great Hall, is licensed for civil ceremonies including under its garden arbour, and can add a marquee seating 50 to 250. 4
