Each laav is first read from the Guru Granth Sahib and then sung by the ragis, and we photograph the seated listening as attentively as the walking, since half the ceremony happens sitting down.
During the choora ceremony we photograph the red and ivory bangles being slipped on by your maternal uncle, the blessings of the family and the tears that usually arrive with them. During the doli we photograph the family gathered at the door and the phulkari over your head, treating the goodbye as one of the truest moments of the whole celebration. Sithniyan sung by the bride's side are teasing, funny and completely untranslatable, and we photograph the aunties delivering them and the groom's family taking it in good humour.

Uncles and cousins fill the groom's house on the morning, and we photograph the noise, the shaving, the tying and the mock ceremony of everybody offering advice at once. Arriving before the makeup artist gives us a calm half hour to photograph the room, the outfit hanging, the jewellery boxes open and the house before it fills with relatives.
We give equal care to the loud moments and the still ones, from the dhol at the baraat to the silence as the couple bow before the Guru Granth Sahib.
