Outside, the milni gives the day its first real photograph: two families meeting on tarmac in whatever weather West Sussex has produced. Wide is right, because the pairing is the point and not the faces. Then the doors, and every condition alters at once. We observe precisely what every other person in that hall observes, seated low along one side, and there we stay. Nothing about it is negotiable, nor does it need to be.

The four laavan sit at the centre, and each circuit offers what the previous one withheld: the palla travelling hand to hand, a grandmother's face among the sangat, the musicians. Nobody photographs during ardas. Afterwards karah parshad and langar get covered as ordinary hospitality, which is what they are. The doli is short, loud and unrepeatable, so waiting outside starts well before it does.

It changes nothing about the preparation. We ring ahead, ask who to speak to on the morning, and arrive with enough spare time to sit in an empty hall learning its sightlines. Any room teaches you that inside twenty minutes.

Will you photograph the maiyan, jago and choora ceremony in Horsham too?+

Yes, and they often yield the warmest material of the entire week. Jago especially runs late and loud in somebody's front room, which suits us well. Give us the dates at booking so the week holds together instead of being assembled piecemeal.

How do you handle photography during the ardas?+

We stop. Cameras come down, we stand along with everybody else, and nothing is taken until it has finished. Whatever we might have gained is not worth what taking it would cost. Stillness is the entire content of that moment.

Are you a candid photographer or do you pose people?+

Mostly the first, deliberately the second for about twenty minutes. Families want a handful of arranged pictures and there is no honour in refusing them. The remainder of a day we spend staying clear and letting it run at its own speed.

Can we add a second photographer to a smaller booking?+

Yes, on any booking rather than only the largest ones. Whether it earns its keep hangs on whether two things genuinely happen at once on your day. Where they do not, that budget does more good elsewhere.
