Somewhere between the hall and the hotel sits an unstructured hour, and it is the day's only one. It is easy to hand it to logistics. We would spend part of it on you, because it falls when Brighton light is at its most usable and because nothing after it is quiet again. Decide in advance who comes along and where you go, or it evaporates into car doors and phone calls.
Guests coming by rail squeeze the day at both ends. Overhead light is the only light going, a flat wash arriving from straight above that leaves eye sockets dark, and it cannot be added to. Long glass wide open, from wherever the rear wall lets us stand, answers most of that; standing still answers the rest. Respect draws the other boundary here. Compose the Guru Granth Sahib into a picture as decoration and you have taken the wrong photograph.
Nobody moves during the four laavan, which sounds straightforward and is not. You get one composition, and every variation has to come from the sangat, the musicians and people's hands rather than from your own feet. Palla, milni and the ardas want three different distances, and none of them tolerate a photographer walking about. Evening inverts all of this. Hire a room and it becomes lightable, so we light it.
