Following the imam's lead through a Brighton nikah
The binding minutes are over faster than most people manage to finish a drink. Nothing is rehearsed and nothing runs twice, so framing and exposure are settled before it opens, and one axis is held right to the end. The imam decides when a shutter should stop, not us. Told that recitation stays unphotographed, we do not fire at all, and a lost frame costs far less than a head turning to look.
What comes afterwards is a different discipline entirely. A walima is lit, scheduled and full of speeches, with an entrance the house usually dims for, and it rewards preparation that has no bearing at all on the ceremony: where power sits, where we can stand clear of a service route, what colour somebody has set the uplighters to. A mehndi night nearer the start of the week is closer and much quieter, mostly hands, fabric and one lamp.
