Inside a darbar hall the sightlines exist for the Sri Guru Granth Sahib's sake, not for a camera, and that settles the argument before anyone has it. We arrive with one long lens and one short, take a floor position that costs nobody a view, and stay in it. Movement during the laavan is slow and entirely predictable, so the morning's strongest pictures belong to the sangat and to the palla being taken up, not to the couple. Kirtan runs long; patience carries most of it.
After karah parshad the job inverts. A reception room hands you permission to change things, so we change them: lights aimed where the speeches will land, the ceiling used or ignored on purpose, colour chosen rather than accepted. Between the two halves sits the doli, the hardest half hour of any Sikh day, because it moves, it is emotional, and it happens in whatever light the doorway happens to have. With a second photographer booked, one covers faces and the other the car.
