Dorking railway station on the Mole Valley line, with Dorking Deepdene and Dorking West on the North Downs line. For portraits away from the celebration, Box Hill, a National Trust chalk down with wide views over the Weald works beautifully, and Denbies Wine Estate, one of England's largest vineyards, on the edge of Dorking adds a real sense of place.

We know the order of the rituals in each tradition, so we are always in position. The joining of hands, the knotting of the couple's garments and their first shared steps carry a marriage forward, and we document each stage as it comes. We work in the background of the priest, the granthi or the imam, reading their rhythm so the ceremony flows without a photographer in the way.

We capture the family moments around the couple, not just the rituals. The mehndi or henna night is intimate and detailed, and we photograph both the henna and the laughter around it. The farewell, when the bride leaves her family, is the most tender moment of many Asian weddings.
