Horsham railway station, on the line to London Victoria and the south coast, has served the town since 1848, with the current listed station building dating from 1938. For portraits away from the celebration, Horsham Park, a large public park with a boating lake close to the town centre works beautifully, and The Capitol Theatre in the town centre adds a real sense of place.

We work in the background of the priest, the granthi or the imam, reading their rhythm so the ceremony flows without a photographer in the way. We photograph the seven steps of the saptapadi and the couple's first steps as a married pair. We work quietly around the priest, the granthi or the imam so the ceremony is never disturbed.

The groom may arrive on horseback, by car or on foot, and whichever way he comes, we are ready for the procession and the dancing around him. The bhangra and the dancing carry the reception late into the night, and we stay for all of it. Preparations hold a quiet anticipation of their own, and we photograph the jewellery, the tying of the turban and the last still moments before the day begins.
