Gurdwara and reception: two rooms, one Redhill day

Count this as two jobs rather than one. Nobody gets to alter the first building: you arrive, you fit around it, and the photography answers to a room whose habits predate your engagement entirely. The second room is hired, so furniture moves, doors close, and light becomes something we build instead of something we accept. Planning them as one commission is the usual mistake.

The seam between them loses more pictures than either building does. People relax, cars get loaded, outdoor light turns useful for twenty minutes, and nobody has said where a photographer should stand. Settle at the planning stage who leaves first, through which door, and what the interval is supposed to allow for. An evening or two beforehand carries mehndi, with a jago after it, lit by whatever a house already owns, which usually means working close in and letting warm colour stand. At the milni the embraces arrive in a line, and side-on is the one angle where neither man vanishes behind the other's shoulder. Inside, a position gets chosen early and kept; a photographer drifting about during the four laavan is a distraction nobody in that room asked for.

What alters between one laavan and the next is therefore not the couple but the congregation: hands, faces, a child who has stopped watching. Palla is the frame obliged to carry an entire ceremony, so it wants a clean line along the cloth with nothing cluttering the far side. Langar was served earlier and reads better as work than as food. Doli closes things quickly, which is why the car is located and its light judged before anyone moves that way.
