Gurdwara light, reception light: a Woking Sikh wedding
A darbar hall arrives with its lighting already decided. You cannot rehang it, you cannot flash into it, and whatever colour those fittings throw is the colour every ceremony frame will carry. So the exposure gets worked out once, early, from a seat on the floor, and then held there for the duration. What remains is a question of where you kneel, and of how quietly you move between one kneeling place and the next. Very little else is available to you.
The evening poses the opposite problem. Bisley Pavilion, Gorse Hill offer a Woking couple ground where light is ours to make rather than ours to accept. Wide glass and a tolerance for being shoved are the only equipment that helps. Indoors, the four laavan hand you identical geometry four times, which is an opportunity most ceremonies never offer. Spend the first round on the couple, the second on the palla, the third on the musicians, the fourth on whichever grandmother has started weeping.
Langar wants a standing eyeline from the row's edge, never a lens looking down on somebody eating. The doli shuts a day down and it is mostly backs: a father's hands, a car door, the instant a road takes over. Requesting any of that twice is impossible. So the sequence gets settled days beforehand, and whoever covers the departure is standing there while the hall still holds people.
