The kirtan, the palla placed in your hands and each round of the laavan would be photographed without flash, and the reception afterwards might be at a licensed room such as Ewell Court House on Lakehurst Road, which takes up to 110 guests. At a large reception, perhaps in the Derby Suite at Epsom Downs Racecourse, we would work inside the crowd on the dance floor rather than from its edge. With a second photographer, both family homes can be covered on the morning before everyone heads to the gurdwara. Add a pre-wedding shoot and an album, and we will travel to Surrey or anywhere in Britain.
Trains from Waterloo and Victoria both serve Epsom, so guests travelling in for the reception have options. Camera position within a darbar hall is settled by the room, not by taste. Sight lines run one way, sangat sit on the floor, and anyone standing becomes an obstruction in a space built for stillness. We therefore stay low, keep to the edges, run silent shutters and add no light of any kind, accepting that whole categories of angle are unavailable to us here. Ask the committee what they expect weeks beforehand, in writing where possible, so nobody is negotiating in a doorway while kirtan is already starting.
Palla links the two of you before the first laav, and from then on the movement is slow and continuous rather than staged, so nothing announces itself and the work turns into anticipating the next step. Ardas closes the ceremony. Underneath every part of it sits one unmoving fact, and every frame we make has to respect Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Epsom's own registration office takes birth and death appointments only, so a civil ceremony would be at The Mansion, Leatherhead Register Office, licensed for up to 58 guests, and portraits on the Downs would be planned for the afternoon, as the public are asked to visit after noon while racehorses train.
