Sitting cross-legged at the edge of the sangat, we photograph the ceremony at eye level, keeping a respectful distance from the Guru Granth Sahib throughout. The moment the fourth laav is completed and the flower petals rain down, we are ready for it, photographing the shower, the smiles and the congregation calling out in joy.
At the sehra bandi we photograph the groom's sisters tying the sehra, the surma being applied and the family fussing over him before the baraat sets off. Doli endings ask for restraint rather than technique. We hold back, use a long lens, and let the family close around the car without a photographer pressing into the middle of the goodbye. The maiyan is warm and wonderfully messy, and we photograph the vatna being applied, the singing of the women and the laughter as the turmeric paste finds every relative in the room.
