An anand karaj splits the day into two jobs with almost nothing in common. Fixed lighting, fixed seating, a carpet whose colour tints every white shirt in the room, and an authority structure deciding where a photographer may kneel: that is the first of them, and not one part of it bends for you. The second sits somewhere couples genuinely choose, and choosing means control.
Where those two halves meet is where the day tends to come unstuck. Clothes change, light drops, half the family is still parking, and an hour disappears unrecorded unless somebody has written down who needs to be where. The night before has a life of its own too, with a jago that ends late and a mehndi that started later than planned.

Baraat, milni and laavan on a Guildford wedding day
The baraat arrives ahead of all of it, loud and unhurried, and nothing about it keeps to the printed time. Milni happens outdoors and happens early, the one stretch where weather supplies your lighting. Faces are scarce at a milni and backs of heads are not, so we work the flank, catching embraces as they land rather than requesting a repeat. Once the palla goes into their hands the couple are physically tied together, and that alters how far apart a frame can hold them before it starts to look wrong.
Inside, four laavan are walked to verse rather than to any cue, and the congregation sits, so a standing photographer becomes an obstruction within seconds. We keep low, off the walkway, letting a long lens carry the distance instead. Langar runs to its own clock; portraits do not delay it.
