Gurdwara morning, Egham reception: two separate jobs
Two quite separate jobs share a Sikh wedding date, and running them together is where couples lose pictures. One occupies a building you cannot alter: everyone down at ground level, overhead light that stays as it is, and an approach to the front which is not a photographer's to walk. The other occupies whatever room you have booked, where lighting becomes a decision again.
Trouble concentrates in the join. Guests scatter, the light outside has moved on, and nobody has told the couple where to stand. We pin a portrait slot into that interval instead of hoping one opens, and we ask early whether the meal happens beneath the ceremony's own roof or elsewhere, since that one answer rearranges the afternoon. Ask your reception venue what access times apply rather than assuming.

The ceremony, shabad by shabad
A darbar hall has already decided most of this before anyone raises it. Everyone is low to the ground, so faces sit below a standing lens, leaving one clean line in, straight up the centre. We stay at the sides, low and largely still, on long glass, because movement during kirtan costs more than any frame is worth. Hall lighting tends to be flat and faintly green, so we correct it instead of adding flash. Reverence, not preference, decides how close a lens comes; the whole geometry bows toward Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Then the four laavan. Each is a circuit of the same short route, and the palla carries the frames: the cloth, the hands gripping it, the small adjustments a brother makes behind. Shot identically four times you have one picture repeated. We move a quarter turn between rounds so the fourth does not match the first. Milni earlier, and doli at the close, belong to families rather than photographers, and the right instinct there is a longer lens and more distance.
