Work in a darbar hall happens at floor level. Everyone sits at the same height, so every frame gets made from roughly a metre off the ground, and most compositions that fill wedding magazines are simply unavailable. That suits the occasion. Seated among the sangat you cannot dart about, so we take one position, hold it right through, and let the ceremony come to us.
The lighting overhead is fixed. It was chosen for a congregation to read by, it holds a single colour and a single level throughout, and there is nothing a photographer may usefully add to it. So exposure, white balance and lens choice get settled inside a minute, and after that nothing changes. Windsor couples then move to a reception that is nothing like it. The milni runs outdoors, early, in whatever weather Berkshire supplies that morning, and it is soon over. Two families form a line; the keepers are the differences in height, the reluctance and the enthusiasm as each pair meets. Langar asks for a different kind of picture entirely. Nobody there is aware of a camera, hands and plates carry it, and all that is required of us is to keep clear while food is served. Standing back is most of what that room asks for.
The laavan repeats four times and is not the same four times. Because the shape recurs, we spend the later rounds on the parents, not on the couple, because the change happens there. Then the doli, outside, in failing light, around a car surrounded by people. The reception room afterwards gets lit from nothing by us, so the evening becomes a second commission that shares a date with the first.

Gurdwaras do not all set the same conditions, and we treat whatever ours sets as settled rather than negotiable. Standing positions, what may be covered, when a lens ought to come down: the committee says it on arrival and that is the brief. No picture we might want justifies asking a congregation to make room for it.

Yes. Getting there early decides this one. A choora is close relatives in a small room at first light, before anybody has remembered to perform for a lens. We would rather arrive ahead of the bangles than after them.
A short first selection reaches you quickly, picked while everything is recent. The whole edit runs longer, since a hall lit one way and a reception lit another want separate colour work and no preset does that.
By using fast lenses, sensors that stay clean wide open, and by taking the hall as we find it. Brightening a hall that was never bright is a lie; these pictures keep whatever light the ceremony genuinely had.
We can, and prefer to. Nothing of ours fires in there. Everything is available light, made from floor level well behind the sangat, and should the committee move us, we move.
A date is reserved on a booking payment and not before. The rest is paid in advance rather than in arrears. Both sums, and the dates attached to them, appear in the contract, so memory is not doing any of the work.
