Floor level seating drops every eyeline far under the height a photographer instinctively works at. Stand up and you photograph a hall of scalps. So we get low too, and hold that for long stretches, which punishes the knees rather more than it sounds. Nobody announces the four laavan; they are sung, so there is no cue to react to. We watch the ragis instead, because the music is what tells you when the couple will rise.

Those circuits repeat, and they turn out identical unless each one is shot from a fresh height, from somewhere else along the hall, at a different focal length. Milni earlier gives the opposite difficulty: a rapid run of embraces among relatives whose paths may not cross again, which nobody will pause on our account. Palla and doli later carry the bulk of the day's feeling, and both improve when the camera keeps its distance until a family forgets it is present.
