Two buildings, two sets of problems. Inside a darbar hall we arrange nothing at all. The etiquette there is the gurdwara's, we follow it without needing to be told twice, and no photographer of ours crosses the line running from sangat towards Guru Granth Sahib. Overhead light hangs above the congregation, holds the same value all morning and answers to nobody, so the work is all lens choice and knowing when to kneel.
The reception is the opposite problem. Once you are in a hotel ballroom the light becomes ours to build, and we bring what that room needs rather than pushing a sensor past what it can do. The risk then is a gallery that splits in half, cool and flat at the start, warm and shaped at the end. We grade the two halves towards each other so the whole thing reads as one day in Slough.

The choora goes on at dawn, in a house, with more relatives present than the room has space for. That is close work with a wide lens and nowhere to retreat to, and the frame worth having is the maternal uncle's hands rather than the bangles. Milni follows outdoors, two families measured against one another, garlands and a lot of shoulder-height embracing, which we cover from the flank because the middle of it is solid backs and elbows.
Inside, the anand karaj offers four laavan and very few options. The palla is placed, the couple circle, and every circuit finishes on the same spot, which risks four identical frames; height and angle change on each pass. Langar afterwards repays more attention than couples expect, plates and elders and children under the tables. Then the doli, which nobody rehearses, covered from far enough back to leave the family alone in it.
