From the choora at dawn to the doli at dusk
Rumalla covering the Guru Granth Sahib, the flowers around the palki sahib, the canopy overhead; these frames set the scene in an album and are taken before the hall fills. Langar after the ceremony is one of our favourite things to photograph, the shared meal, the rows of guests and the sewadars serving everyone without distinction. Longer focal lengths carry the whole ceremony for us, letting the frames sit close to you while our feet stay at the edge of the hall, well away from the Guru Granth Sahib.
Ladies sangeet nights around Slough tend to run long and loud, and we pace ourselves with them, photographing the giddha, the boliyan and the dholki passed from lap to lap. Bhangra takes over the reception floor, and we photograph the shoulders, the spins and the whole room moving together as the dhol and the DJ trade the night between them. We photograph the jago pot itself, the lit candles or lights on the decorated gagar, before it disappears into the dancing and the noise of the procession.
