Mangni and the mehndi night are the loose, loud, colour-heavy hours, and they hold most of the pictures of your friends and cousins. Whether we are in the room for either depends entirely on who else is, so it gets settled well beforehand and then honoured. A nikah takes minutes, kept low and undramatic, closer to a signing than a performance, and nobody will run it twice for a camera.
Your imam speaks, and the room drops to nothing. Ijab and qubool cross the room, mahr gets named aloud, two witnesses add their names where the nikah-nama requires them, and the whole of it can finish before the guests have stopped shuffling. So: silent shutter, long glass, and a spot chosen while the chairs are still empty. Recitation stops us completely, which we say out loud beforehand so nobody has to wave at us. Then walima, a lit event, covered like one.
