Two witnesses must hear and confirm the contract, and we place them clearly in frame. Their presence is what makes the nikah valid, and an album without them tells the story incompletely. Just before the offer is made there is a pause, the room settles and everyone leans slightly forward. We hold on the couple through it, because the anticipation belongs in the album too. Khutbah first. We photograph the qazi or imam addressing the couple and the families listening, so the album opens the ceremony the way the ceremony actually opened.
Pressed gently into the couple's mouths, the engagement sweets and the mangni ring on the finger are photographed with the elders looking on in real affection. A step back is where we work for the rukhsati, photographing the farewell without crowding it, so the weight of leaving home is held with the tenderness it deserves. Mangni is where two families commit in front of each other, and the rings, the sweets and the handshakes between fathers are worth covering properly rather than treating as a warm-up.
