Walima is the groom's family's invitation to the community, and it deserves to be photographed as a proper occasion: the entrance, the stage, the speeches, the meal and the room slowly filling. Flower jewellery, yellow and green outfits and decorated thaals give the mehndi a visual identity nothing else in the week has, and we shoot for that colour deliberately. Entrances at the walima are stage-managed, announced and applauded, and they happen once. We are set for it well beforehand, with the doors, the walk and the reaction all planned for.

Sherwani, kurta or suit, the topi or the turban, the cufflinks and the watch. The groom's preparation is quieter than the bride's but it photographs beautifully, especially with brothers crowding the room. Arriving at the mosque or venue is its own small moment, and we photograph the shoes coming off, the heads being covered and the family gathering at the door.
Dance floors reward patience. We wait for the moment the older generation is pulled up, because that frame is worth more to a family than an hour of the same young cousins dancing. Once the baraat sets off the day moves quickly, and we stay close so the greeting, the nikah and the meal are all covered without gaps.
