Seating comes ahead of lighting in our questions. A room that divides is really two rooms with two atmospheres and two sets of permissions, and the camera goes only where it is allowed to be. Whether each part of a divided room is to be photographed at all belongs to the enquiry, not to the hours before a ceremony, since it governs how the day is covered and where the camera may be asked to stand.

Then there is what becomes of the pictures. Some families want everything visible, others want the bride seen by relatives only, and both are workable provided the line gets drawn at the outset instead of argued over once a gallery exists. Mangni and mehndi occupy the loose, warm end of things, usually in a house where a table lamp and somebody's phone torch do all the work. The nikah is short and it is quiet. Nothing in a hushed room carries like a mechanical shutter, so silent mode goes on, a single position gets chosen, and we hold it. Terms come from the imam, never from a venue's events office.

Signing pulls heads together over a table, so the frame wants to be tight and low, with no width in it at all. The nikah-nama is signed in front of the witnesses before half the room has looked up. A walima is another animal entirely: an event you light, held under downlights hung with conferences in mind, so we either gel to match them or drown them and take the colour back. Rukhsati lands at a doorway in the dark, where one light on a stand beats grain every time.

We are quiet during the nikah and useful at the walima, two different skills, and most photographers carry only one of them. While the contract is made, nothing whatsoever is asked of you. Later, when the room is loud and badly lit, we will shift furniture and put light where it is missing.

Mostly candid, directed where directing matters. Groups and couple portraits get run properly; there is no other way to get them. Everything else we keep out of, since people told where to stand stop behaving like guests at a wedding.

Can our parents order their own albums or prints?+

Yes. Once the gallery is signed off, anyone you give access to may order from it, parents included. Their book can follow your layout or take a different edit, with other faces on the pages.
