Ascot Racecourse, founded by Queen Anne in 1711, is licensed by the Royal Borough for weddings and could suit a large Sikh reception after the anand karaj. The ceremony itself happens at the gurdwara: heads covered, shoes off, and the Guru Granth Sahib never reduced to a background. The four laavan, the palla and the ardas are photographed quietly from within the sangat. The milni happens at the gurdwara beforehand and the kalire at home that morning; afterwards the reception and the doli play out with space to spare, and the Savill Garden suits the couple portraits.

Planning an Anand Karaj and an Ascot reception
Two buildings, and the jobs they set are unrelated. The first is not ours to arrange. Terms inside the hall come from the committee that runs it and not from a couple, so questions about kneeling positions and what is off limits go to them weeks ahead. The floor is carpeted and the sangat sits on it, which drops the room's eye level to knee height. Stand upright in there and you are above every head present.
Colour wants settling early too. Halls tend to run high windows against tube lighting that leans green, and a manual white balance taken off that carpet in an empty room rescues every frame after it. The reception reverses the arrangement. You light that one, and how you light it depends entirely on what hangs overhead. Bounce off a low pale ceiling in a hotel suite works. In a room built at grandstand scale there is nothing up there to bounce from, so stands come in.

Milni to doli, moment by moment
Milni arrives as a queue of pairings whose order is never written down, so we find the uncle holding it in his head and stand where light falls on the greeting rather than on the crowd behind it. A baraat reaching a country house has gravel underfoot and drums out front, and we work its edge. Jago runs after dark with a lit pot doing the job of a lamp, and metering for that pot instead of the street is the whole trick of it.
Anand karaj hands you one viewpoint you may never take, because the couple face the palki and the frontal view sits behind it. Take the three-quarter angle and stop hunting. Palla passes at chest height and vanishes into the sangat unless a gap exists on your side, so that gap gets chosen long before. Four laavan means four returns to one spot, and only the faces alter. Langar is steel, hands and strip light. Doli we leave to the family.

Whatever we are told. We ask on arrival, we keep to the line we are given, and no lens of ours ever looks down on the palki. If something is refused, that refusal settles it and we do not press.
From ahead and to one side, never reversing along in front of the drums. Arrivals are loud, brief and unrepeatable, so a second body with a wider lens hangs ready instead of being swapped for mid-procession.
Previews land within days, while everyone still wants to look. The finished gallery, culled and colour-matched properly, follows later. A date comes with the booking, and if anything slips you hear about it early.
