Anand Sahib is recited near the close of the ceremony, and we use those minutes for the hall as a whole, the rows of relatives, the children at the front, the light on the rumalla. Karah prashad is received in cupped hands and shared along the rows, and we photograph the giving rather than only the taking, since the sewadars are as much part of the morning as anyone. Karah parshad closes the anand karaj, and we photograph the warm handfuls being shared down the rows, one of the small moments couples are always glad to have kept.
The maiyan is warm and wonderfully messy, and we photograph the vatna being applied, the singing of the women and the laughter as the turmeric paste finds every relative in the room. Phulkari draped over the bride's head at the doli catches the light beautifully, and we position ourselves so the fabric, the tears and the family behind her all sit in one frame. The gana, the red thread tied at the wrist before the wedding, is a small ritual we always make sure to photograph, because the details carry the story as much as the big moments.

Nerves show in small ways, a hand smoothing a dupatta, a father checking his watch, a brother pacing the hall, and those frames give the morning its honesty in the finished album. The jago brings the neighbourhood to the door, and we follow the dancing and the lit pot through the evening so its noise and joy come across.
After the fourth laav the pace changes completely, from stillness to celebration in a matter of seconds, and being ready for that shift is half of covering a Sikh wedding day well. Money garlands and blessings after the ceremony come in a rush of relatives, and we work steadily through it so nobody who stepped forward is missing from the finished gallery.
