The ceremonies are rarely what goes wrong across a wedding spread over days. Trouble collects between them: cars shuttling with nobody quite in charge, a bride ready long before anyone needs her, a getting-ready room running over and swallowing the portrait window sitting behind it. Stretches like that belong to no one, and at the planning stage we want somebody's name attached to each one, then that name confirmed again a fortnight beforehand.

Ascot helps, in that its buildings are grouped tightly enough for a weekend to stay in one place, but grouping only helps once somebody has fixed the order. We want the running sheet for the whole weekend and not merely for the day carrying the ceremony. Cards get copied and batteries swapped inside those same unclaimed gaps, which is a second reason to know precisely where they fall.

The Mandap, the Palki and the Rites Within

One family's weekend turns on the pheras. Another's turns on four laavan. A third's turns on a nikah-nama that two witnesses put their names to. They are not one event wearing three different labels, and treating them that way shows in the pictures. We use the right word for each, and families hear that long before they hear anything technical about lenses or lighting. A palki arriving sets a wholly different problem from a mandap waiting to be lit, and neither gets solved by the other's answer.

South Indian mornings begin before the sun does, so a muhurtham gets photographed under whatever the caretaker switched on. Sangeet and mehndi run late and loose, nobody nervous yet. At a vidaai a camera belongs well back, further back than anybody asks us to stand. Around all of it sit meals, changes of clothes and long waits, and those hours produce more keepers than the ceremonies do.

Do you provide a second photographer?+

Yes, and across a weekend of several events two of us is usually the sensible answer rather than an upgrade. Two cameras cover a bride's house and a groom's in the same hour, or a divided room where one of us would not be allowed.

Do you photograph at temples, gurdwaras and mosques?+

We do, on the building's terms. Each one has its own rules about position, flash and who may stand where, and those come from the committee running the place. Asking in advance is standard practice for us, and an answer we dislike remains the answer.

Are you experienced with Tamil and South Indian weddings?+

Yes. An early muhurtham, a thali, a ceremony that runs long with family pressed close in: those are traditions we work with. Tell us which customs your family keeps and timings get built around them rather than around a generic running order.

Do you photograph the mehndi and sangeet nights before the wedding?+

Yes, and both are worth covering properly. They run in low light with a crowd that has not begun feeling nervous, and the loosest pictures of a whole weekend come out of them. Book them into the job rather than bolting them on.

Will you photograph the vidaai or bride's farewell?+

Yes, from well back and without a word from us. Direction would be an intrusion there, so a longer lens comes out, the doorway stays empty of us, and the family gets that moment to itself.
