Slough is a town with one of the country's largest South Asian communities, with many gurdwaras, temples, mosques and banqueting halls. We regularly photograph Asian weddings throughout Langley, Burnham and Windsor and the surrounding part of Berkshire. At a Sikh wedding the exchange of garlands and the palla placed in the couple's hands begin the Anand Karaj, and we follow from the very first hymn.

We photograph the sacred and the joyful with equal care, the vows as faithfully as the bhangra. We are a reassuring, familiar presence, so everyone relaxes and the day flows naturally. We cover both families equally, making sure the groom's side and the bride's side each come away with a full record of their own people and their own moments.

Slough station is on the Great Western Main Line and the Elizabeth line, with the M4 running along the southern edge of the town. We often take couples to Salt Hill Park, a Victorian public park in the west of the town for a few quiet portraits, and Upton Court and St Laurence's Church at Upton, and the town's association with astronomer William Herschel is a lovely backdrop nearby.

The vows at a nikah end in the joyful declaration that the couple are married, and the room's relief and delight are ours to keep. For Gujarati families we know the hastamelap and the four mangal pheras and photograph each as you keep it. We work quietly around the priest, the granthi or the imam so the ceremony is never disturbed.

Preparations hold a quiet anticipation of their own, and we photograph the jewellery, the tying of the turban and the last still moments before the day begins. When the baraat sets off, the dhol drives the dancing and the groom moves slowly forward amid his family, and we are in the thick of every joyful step. From the turmeric of the haldi to the music of the sangeet, the events set the tone for the wedding.
