Pheras, nikah or laavan: each ceremony on its own terms

Traditions differ and we will not pretend they overlap. Some of you are having pheras; some a signed nikah-nama, witnesses either side; some the laavan, four of them, sung. None of those asks the same thing of a camera. One is lit by fire at floor level. One by a ceiling above seated sangat that nobody may adjust. One by whichever room the family judged right for something short and quiet. We ask which at the first conversation, in exactly those words.

Evenings converge more than ceremonies do. Mehndi nights, garba, jago, dholki: late, indoors, lit badly, all of them needing light we carry in rather than light we hunt for. A reception, though, exists to be looked at, so we cut back and choose harder there: full room, speeches, the moment a father realises he is next, and the faces watching rather than the couple who already know they are being watched.
