A darbar hall exists for worship, and its windows, its carpet colour and the height of its balcony rail were all decided decades before your date. We take every bit of that as given and work inside it: nothing on stands, nothing shifted, no sevadar asked to step aside. What we come away with is a product of timing and of the few positions open to us, not of control.

Langar comes next, gets photographed least, and is frequently the warmest hour of a Sikh wedding, so we stay through it instead of breaking. The doli closes everything and is the day's hardest thing to render well: winter has gone dark by then, the crowd presses inward, and nobody wants a flash fired into a weeping face. We work it at high sensitivity from slightly above so heads do not stack, taking grain over intrusion every time.
