Overhead light in a hall is fixed, usually fluorescent, and nothing of ours joins it. That decides the kit: fast glass, high sensitivity, long lenses worked from the back and the sides, and a warm cast accepted rather than fought. Presiding from the platform is the Guru Granth Sahib. Every camera position we occupy sits lower than it does. Nobody has to raise the point while your guests are arriving, which spares your family one more conversation.
Four laavan invite four identical photographs and we refuse them. The palla is what rewards attention: the cloth joins the couple and reads far better from the side than head on, where hands and shoulders overlap into a muddle. Between shabads nothing moves at all. Those minutes belong to the older relatives sitting at the back, whose attention is the honest record of what is going on. Later the doli empties a building fast, so one of us stays unloaded for it.
