Notley Abbey sits on the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire border, at the end of a long, tree-lined drive in private riverside grounds. It is run by Harper Weddings, which describes it as an exclusive hire venue that is "yours and yours alone for your wedding day and night" (Notley Abbey welcome page). The 15th-century house and the Monks' Refectory, a stone barn with a 13th-century back wall, were home to Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh for almost two decades.

Most weddings here are packages with Harper's own catering, but the venue also offers dry hire for cultural celebrations, so you can bring your own caterer and service team. Our studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, photographing weddings since 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 580+ Google reviews. We are glad to photograph at Notley Abbey, we travel to Notley from the studio, and coverage starts from £750. Below is what the venue publishes, and what it does not.

What a Notley Abbey wedding costs in 2026 and 2027

Harper Weddings publishes two sets of prices for Notley Abbey on its pricing page (pricing and offers). VAT status is not stated, so ask whether the figures include it.

  • Winter Wedding Offer, January to March 2027: £14,500 Monday to Thursday, £17,000 Friday to Sunday. It includes 24 hours' exclusive use of the house and grounds, a food and drinks package for 80 adult day guests, overnight accommodation (minimums apply), a fairy light canopy and a DJ. Additional guests are £144 each. Bank holidays are excluded.
  • Dry hire, October 2026 to June 2027: £9,000 Monday to Thursday, £10,000 Friday or Sunday, £11,000 Saturday or bank holiday. You bring your own catering and service team.
  • April and May 2027 offer: new bookings get Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée for the toast and evening food for 70 guests from the late-night menu. The underlying price for these months is not published.

Full package prices for other months are in the brochure, which is sent on request rather than published (welcome page). The FAQ says every Harper venue has a minimum guest number that varies by season and day, though it does not apply to dry hire. To hold a date, a refundable £500 secures it for 10 days, a further £1,000 confirms it, and the £1,500 total comes off your balance (Harper FAQs).

Package weddings include Harper's own food and drink, with a drinks reception of Pimm's and Prosecco, half a bottle of house wine per guest and a glass of Prosecco for the speeches (food and drink page). External caterers are only allowed on select dry hire dates.

The Abbot's Hall, the Refectory or the Walled Garden

The Harper FAQ says all its venues are licensed for civil ceremonies inside and outside, and that you should check the registrar's availability when you hold a date (Harper FAQs). At Notley there are three settings: the Abbot's Hall for up to 100, with carved oak beams and a fireplace the venue dates to the days of Henry V; the Monks' Refectory for up to 164, a stone barn entered from the Cloister's Garden; and the Walled Garden for up to 164 on a white carpet aisle or the lawn. The venue adds that "even the ivy-clad nook in the wall is licensed" (ceremonies and receptions).

Buckinghamshire Council's listing gives different figures: The Refectory 200, Abbots Hall 110, and the Nook (outside) 6 (council listing). Confirm which capacity applies to your ceremony room.

Dry hire is described as available "for cultural celebrations", with your own catering and service team. Notley does not publish whether a mandap, havan, nikah or baraat can be held, or what halal or vegetarian menus the in-house kitchen offers beyond "plant-based dishes". Ask the wedding planning team in writing about each.

Petals, drones and fireworks: Notley Abbey's published rules

The Harper FAQ covers several rules that shape the photographs, including confetti, drones and candles (Harper FAQs). It says nothing about photographers, so confirm your choice with the planning team.

Photography during the ceremonyNot published; the registrar sets the rules for a civil ceremony, so ask them
Own photographerNot published; no required photographer list appears on the venue's pages
FlashNot published
DronesPermitted, provided the required documents such as a Flyer ID and insurance are supplied beforehand
ConfettiReal petals only, dried or fresh, light in colour and biodegradable; cannons and streamers indoors only
CandlesReal candles permitted in a holder, lantern or vase
Fireworks and sparklersBoth permitted; the planning team notifies the nearby farm of a display
Finish time11.30pm as standard, extendable to 1am at a charge

Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.

Getting ready in the Notley Suite

The Notley Suite is the couple's room, complimentary with the wedding, and the venue presents it as the place for final touches and first-look moments: a four-poster bed, a fireplace and countryside views through ancient stone windows, "bathed in natural light" (bedrooms page). It also serves as a private retreat for an outfit change during the day. There are eight further guest bedrooms in the main house and the nearby cottage, some en suite, named after famous guests such as Henry VIII and Marilyn Monroe. A separate preparation room for the other half of the couple is not named, so ask which bedroom can be held for it.

Planning photographs at Notley Abbey: the drive, the cloisters and the garden

  • The long, tree-lined drive is a feature the venue photographs itself, and the welcome page shows newlyweds on it. The Oliviers planted a widow's walk along the drive, which the history page says still exists (history page).
  • The venue describes the Walled Garden as suited to summer weddings, and the council listing mentions lavender in the riverside grounds, so plan garden portraits for the warmer months.
  • The Cloister Garden and the front lawn are where drinks happen, so group photographs belong there in good weather.
  • In winter, drinks move to the Hall and Drawing Room with open fires, which suits indoor family groups.
  • The Monks' Refectory has vaulted ceilings, and the Abbot's Hall carved oak beams; check the light table below so a portrait outside happens before sunset.
  • The Notley Suite's stone windows give natural light for preparation pictures.
  • Ramps give access to all the main spaces, and the cottage rooms are on the ground floor, which helps when placing older guests.

A medieval abbey, Henry VIII and the Oliviers

Harper's history page describes a 12th-century abbey, with a Monks' Refectory whose back wall dates to the 13th century and a main house built in the 15th century (Notley Abbey history). Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed at Notley for three days in September 1529, a visit the page says National Archives records confirm.

Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh looked at the abbey in 1944 after losing their home in a bomb raid, and bought it shortly before the war ended. They lived there for almost two decades and planted rose bushes and the widow's walk along the drive. Guests over those years included Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller, Katharine Hepburn, Noël Coward and Judy Garland, and several bedrooms are now named after them.

Finding Notley Abbey on the county border

Buckinghamshire Council lists Notley Abbey at Haddenham HP17 8TN (council listing), and the venue describes itself as on the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire border, reached along a long, tree-lined drive. Harper does not publish directions, a nearest station or taxi advice on its Notley pages, so ask the team for the directions sheet before sending invitations. We travel to Notley Abbey from our Northwood studio, and travel is set out in the written quote.

Parking at Notley Abbey and leaving cars overnight

The Harper FAQ says the venue prefers that cars are not left overnight. Non-residents who must leave a car should collect it by 10am the next morning, at the owner's risk (Harper FAQs). The number of spaces and coach access are not published, so ask the team if you expect a large evening guest list.

The Abbot's Hall takes up to 100 for a ceremony and the Monks' Refectory and Walled Garden up to 164. Buckinghamshire Council's listing gives The Refectory as 200 and Abbots Hall as 110, so confirm the figure for your room.

Can we have an Asian wedding at Notley Abbey?

Notley offers dry hire "for cultural celebrations", which lets you bring your own catering and service team, at £9,000 to £11,000 between October 2026 and June 2027. The venue does not publish whether a mandap, havan, nikah or baraat is permitted. Fireworks, sparklers and real candles are allowed. Ask the planning team in writing about each ceremony element before you book.

Can you have confetti at Notley Abbey?

Yes, but only real petals, dried or fresh, light in colour and biodegradable, under the Harper FAQ that covers all its venues. Confetti cannons and streamers can only be used inside. The Cloister Garden and front lawn, where drinks are served, are the natural places for a petal exit after the ceremony.

Can a photographer fly a drone at Notley Abbey?

The Harper FAQ says drones are permitted at its venues, provided the required documents, such as a Flyer ID and insurance, are supplied beforehand. Fireworks are also allowed, and the planning team will notify the nearby farm before a display.

What time do Notley Abbey weddings finish?

The FAQ gives a standard finish of 11.30pm, extendable to 1am at a charge. On dry hire the pricing page describes exclusive use until midnight, or for 24 hours if you stay the night.

Is there accommodation at Notley Abbey?

Yes. There are nine bedrooms: the complimentary Notley Suite for the couple, with a four-poster bed and fireplace, and eight more in the main house and the nearby cottage. Some are en suite and others have a private bathroom just outside. Guests gather in the Dining Room for breakfast the morning after.
