Waddesdon Manor is the French Renaissance-style house Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild built near Aylesbury between 1874 and 1885, now owned by the National Trust and managed by the Rothschild Foundation. The estate's events team, Waddesdon Private Events, runs two exclusive-use wedding venues: The Dairy, a Victorian building on its own ornamental lake, and the Manor, where ceremonies take place in the White Drawing Room or beside the Aviary (weddings page).

Most of what Waddesdon publishes in detail is about The Dairy: room capacities, four priced packages and the hours of hire. The Manor is described more briefly, with a brochure that says a limited number of weddings can be held in its interior. This guide sets out what the venue's own pages and the Buckinghamshire ceremonies register say, and flags what you will need to ask.

Our studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood Hills HA6 1NU, photographing weddings since 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 580+ Google reviews. We are glad to photograph at Waddesdon Manor and The Dairy, and coverage starts from £750.

What a Waddesdon wedding costs: the four Dairy packages and the Manor

Waddesdon sells weddings at The Dairy as four packages, each bundling venue hire with named caterers, flowers and a cake (wedding packages):

  • Willow: £33,000 for 80 guests, Monday to Thursday, or any day in low season (January, February, March and November), with Cavendish catering (Willow brochure).
  • Emerald: from £46,000 for 100 guests, with Cavendish Events, Flowers by Justine and Lindsay Pemberton cakes. The 2025 price table runs from £46,000 in low season to £53,000, including VAT, depending on month and day (Emerald brochure).
  • Amber: from £70,000 for 100 guests, with Host Hospitality.
  • Garnet: from £88,000 for 100 guests, with AP&Co and Veevers Carter flowers.

The packages page says each can be expanded to 152 guests for an extra fee; the Willow and Emerald brochures instead say up to 150 guests on round or long tables, or 180 on long tables only. The Willow brochure prices extra day guests at £160.20, evening-only guests at £24 and children aged 2 to 12 at £48, all including VAT, and asks for payment in three parts: 50% at contract, 25% three months before and the balance four weeks before.

The Manor is priced differently. Its brochure's venue hire table covers the Manor and grounds from 6pm, April to September, and shows both "POA" and "from £50,000", with all 16 bedrooms at The Five Arrows listed at £4,050, prices including VAT (Manor brochure). Catering comes on top from the brochure's caterer list. Ask the events team for a written quote for your date, since the table does not make clear what the £50,000 covers.

Ceremonies at The Dairy, the White Drawing Room and the Aviary

Both venues appear on Buckinghamshire Council's register of approved ceremony venues. For The Dairy the council lists the South Hall and West Hall at 150 each, the Winter Garden at 130, a Secret Garden at 60 and a Lakeside Pavilion at 36, plus two outside areas, the Inner Courtyard and Heritage (council listing for The Dairy). The venue's own page gives higher ceremony figures (West Hall 250, South Hall 180, Courtyard 500), so confirm which number your licensed room carries.

At the Manor, the venue names the White Drawing Room, whose picture windows overlook the Victorian Parterre, and the restored Aviary as ceremony settings (Manor brochure). The council's Manor listing names a White Dining Room for 40 and The Aviary (outside) for 6 (council listing for the Manor); ask the venue which room name and capacity appear on the approval. Civil ceremonies are conducted by Buckinghamshire registrars, booked separately.

The Manor brochure lists Asian caterers (Ragasaan, Laguna and Greenleaf), African and Caribbean, and kosher caterers, and names Asian wedding planners among its coordinators. Waddesdon does not publish whether a mandap, havan, fire ceremony, nikah or baraat is permitted at either venue, nor ceremony start times. Ask the events team in writing before you book.

Photography at Waddesdon: no flash in the house, drones by application

Waddesdon is strict about photography on the visitor side of the estate: visitors in wedding attire are not admitted to the house or gardens, and professional wedding, engagement or portrait photography must be arranged in advance, or staff may ask you to leave (filming page). Inside the house, flash and tripods are not allowed (visitor FAQs). The rules for booked wedding guests on the day are not published separately, so confirm them with the events team.

Getting ready: the Buttery and the Dairy Cottage

At The Dairy, the venue names the Buttery, beside the main building and surrounded by gardens and sculpture, as a space to get ready on the day (Dairy page). Dairy packages include a two-night stay at Dairy Cottage with a breakfast hamper from The Five Arrows on the morning of the wedding (Willow brochure). The sources differ on its size: the Dairy page says it sleeps six, the Willow brochure says up to four in two double bedrooms. A getting-ready room at the Manor is not published, so ask.

Planning photographs by the lake and at the Manor

  • The Dairy overlooks its own ornamental lake and rockwork garden; the Terrace and Lake has two pavilions over the water, which the venue suggests for summer drinks (Dairy page).
  • The Winter Garden is described as full of natural light with lake views, which makes it the indoor option for portraits in poor weather.
  • The West Hall has a vaulted ceiling and two large open fireplaces, and the packages include two oil lamp chandeliers of 64 lamps each, so evening detail shots work there.
  • Guests enter through the inner Courtyard, which suits a ceremony exit and large group photographs.
  • At the Manor, the White Drawing Room's large windows face the Victorian Parterre; the Blue Dining Room has an Ingo Maurer chandelier; and the Aviary houses colourful exotic birds (Manor brochure).
  • Inside the house, the historic first-floor lift is small and the Treasury is reached by chair lift only; plan group photographs around older guests (visitor FAQs).

Baron Ferdinand's château and the Victorian Dairy

Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bought the 2,700-acre estate in 1874 and built the house between 1874 and 1885 to show his collection and host weekend house parties, with Hippolyte Destailleur as architect and Elie Lainé designing the gardens. The first house party was held in 1883, and the Aviary followed in 1889 for his rare birds (history of the Manor).

Ferdinand left the estate to his sister Alice in 1898; it passed to James de Rothschild in 1922, and James left the house, its key collections and grounds to the National Trust in 1957. A Rothschild family committee, now the Rothschild Foundation, still runs it.

The Dairy was built around 1885 as the estate's working dairy, designed to be picturesque beside its own lake. It declined in the 20th century, was restored as an entertaining space in the late 1990s by Julian and Isobel Bannerman, and was revitalised again in 2020 (Dairy page).

Aylesbury, the A41 and the Waddesdon Greenway

Waddesdon is just off the A41 between Bicester and Aylesbury; the satnav postcode is HP18 0JH and the main visitor entrance is on Silk Street. The venue warns of HS2 roadworks on nearby roads, so check routes on the day. The nearest station is Aylesbury Vale Parkway on Chiltern Railways, with buses 16, 17 and 616, taxis, or the 4km Waddesdon Greenway path to the village and the Manor (getting here). We travel to Waddesdon from our Northwood studio, and travel is set out in the written quote.

Parking at Waddesdon for wedding guests

The visitor car park is free, has over 1,000 spaces, Blue Badge bays and four EV charging points, and is a 20 to 25 minute walk from the house on a path with steep sections; a shuttle runs every 10 minutes until 5.30pm (visitor FAQs). Those are visitor arrangements. Parking for wedding guests at The Dairy or the Manor, and whether cars can stay overnight, is not published, so ask the events team.
