Handing the signed nikah-nama across the table is a small administrative act with enormous weight, and we photograph the paper changing hands as carefully as we photograph the couple. Interpretation for guests who do not follow Arabic or Urdu is common at mixed families' ceremonies, and we cover the interpreter and the couple together so the album records how everyone was included. Signing takes seconds. The pen is picked up, three or four names go onto the nikah-nama, and it is over, which is why we are in position long before anybody sits down.

Henna takes hours to draw and hours more to darken, so the mehndi is photographed in stages: the cones and trays early, the artist at work, and the finished patterns once they have deepened. Somali weddings carry their own sequence of gatherings and their own music, and we ask rather than assume, because a template borrowed from another community would miss half of what matters. Up close we photograph the henna artist's fine work, the cones, the trays and the patterns taking shape, so the craft of the night is remembered.
