We shoot the getting-ready hours as a story of anticipation, from the jewellery going on to the last look in the mirror before the ceremony. A second photographer means we can be at the mandap and with the guests at once, so the reactions in the room are held alongside the ritual at the front. Knowing the order of a Hindu ceremony means we are already in position for the pheras and the sindoor, not scrambling to catch up once they begin.

We often take couples to Northlands Park, a park with a lake to the north of the town for a few quiet portraits, and Wat Tyler Country Park at Pitsea, on the site of a former explosives factory is a lovely backdrop nearby.

Whatever your family keeps, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati or Tamil, we follow the ritual closely and respectfully. At a Muslim wedding, the nikah and the signing of the contract carry great dignity, and we cover them with respect. For Tamil and South Indian families, the muhurtham reaches its heart as the thali is tied, and we are in position for that single, defining second.

At the milni the two families meet and embrace, garlands are exchanged and the elders greet one another, and we record the warmth of that first joining. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it. The bhangra and the dancing carry the reception late into the night, and we stay for all of it.
