Newborn sessions are gentle, unhurried and led entirely by your baby. A little preparation makes the day calmer for everyone, and calmer babies make for the most beautiful photographs. Below is everything new parents need to plan the timing, the feeds, the room and the small comforts that keep a baby settled, so you can relax and enjoy watching those first portraits come to life.
Book your newborn shoot for the first two weeks, ideally between five and fourteen days old. Photography education resource SLR Lounge notes that newborns are sleepiest and most flexible in this window, which is when those classic curled, settled poses come most naturally.
During these first days your baby is still curled from the womb, sleeps deeply between feeds and can be gently posed without any fuss. From around three weeks, babies grow more alert and startle more easily, so posed newborn photographs become harder to capture. None of this is a strict deadline. We photograph older babies happily too, simply with a more awake, interactive feel, and the results are just as lovely. If you would like more detail on planning ahead, our guide on newborn photography and when to book walks through the timeline in full.
Warmth is one of the simplest ways to keep a newborn settled. Babies relax and sleep most soundly when they are cosy, so we keep the studio noticeably warmer than feels comfortable for the adults in the room. A warm baby is a sleepy, contented baby, and a contented baby poses beautifully.
In the womb your baby was held at a constant, snug temperature, so a warm room helps them feel safe and drift off between setups. Dress yourself in light layers you can easily shed, and do not worry when the studio feels too warm for you. It is exactly right for your baby. We also work with heated pads and soft wraps to keep those curled poses comfortable, and we clean every prop and surface before you arrive.
Feed your baby just before we begin, and expect to feed again during the session. Newborns feed little and often. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most newborns feed eight to twelve times in twenty-four hours, so a top-up part-way through is completely normal and welcome.
A full baby is a sleepy, content baby, and a good feed just before we start often buys us that lovely settled window for posing. There is never any rush. If your baby wakes hungry mid-session we simply pause, you feed, and we carry on once they have drifted back off. Bring whatever you normally use, whether that is bottles and formula or nothing at all for breastfeeding, and feed exactly as you would at home.
Allow two to three hours for a newborn session, and expect natural breaks throughout. Newborns sleep in short bursts rather than long stretches. The NHS notes that a newborn may sleep anywhere from around eight to eighteen hours a day, waking often to feed, so a patient, unhurried pace is essential.
That relaxed timescale is the secret to natural newborn photographs. We build in time for feeding, soothing, nappy changes and cuddles, and we never work to the clock. Some babies settle within minutes; others take an hour to properly relax, and both are perfectly normal. The more time we allow, the calmer everyone stays, and calm is what shows in the final images.
Bring a feed, spare nappies, a dummy if you use one, a change of clothes for your baby and anything sentimental you would like included. Small comforts and meaningful keepsakes make the session smoother and the photographs more personal to your family.
A special blanket, a knitted heirloom passed down through the family, or a meaningful toy can all become part of the story we tell in pictures. Pack a spare outfit or two for your baby in case of any little accidents, and something for yourself as well if you would like to appear in a few frames. If you have particular colours or a nursery palette in mind, tell us in advance and we will plan the setups and wraps around them.
The calmest thing you can do is relax yourself. Babies take their cue from the adults around them, so a slow, gentle atmosphere helps enormously. White noise, gentle swaying, a warm room and a full tummy are our most reliable settling tools throughout the session.
We keep voices low, movements slow and the whole room unhurried. If your baby becomes unsettled we pause, soothe and wait, because a forced pose never photographs well. You are welcome to feed, cuddle and comfort at any point, and many of our favourite images are the quiet, in-between moments rather than the formal poses. Trust the process and let your baby lead the pace.
Yes, and we warmly encourage it. Some of the most treasured newborn images include parents' hands, a sibling's first cuddle or the whole family together. These relationship shots capture the scale and tenderness of those early days in a way posed baby portraits alone cannot.
Older siblings are welcome, and we keep their part of the session short and playful so it stays fun for them. If you would like to combine your newborn shoot with wider family photography, just let us know and we will plan for it. Many parents also book a session while expecting, using our maternity photography guide to prepare, then return for newborn portraits, giving a beautiful before-and-after pair. You can see how we approach these gentle sessions on our baby and newborn photography page.
Above all, relax. Your baby takes their cue from you, and our whole approach is built around patience. Bring everything you need, expect to take your time, and let us do the rest.
