For relaxed couple photographs, we like Therfield Heath, an expanse of chalk grassland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest on the edge of the town, and Royston Cave, a mysterious medieval man-made chamber with religious wall carvings beneath Melbourn Street gives the day a strong sense of Royston.

Whatever your faith, the auspicious hour sets the tempo, and we plan our positions around the muhurat or muhurtham so the sacred minutes are never rushed for a picture. The garland exchange, when the couple meet with the jaimala, is a moment of pure joy we love to photograph. Whatever your family keeps, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati or Tamil, we follow the ritual closely and respectfully.

The reception carries the celebration into the night with speeches, the first dance and the floor filling for the bhangra, and we stay to the final song. The mehndi evening is close and detailed, henna curling across the bride's hands while the room fills with song, and we photograph the artistry and the laughter alike. The haldi or pithi is turmeric, colour and mischief in equal measure, and it often gives us the warmest and most unguarded frames of the whole wedding.
