Hever Castle near Edenbridge was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, and was restored by William Waldorf Astor after he bought it in 1903. Weddings use three settings on the 125-acre estate: the Castle itself, the Astor Wing (the Tudor-style village Astor built beside it), and the Italian Garden, where ceremonies take place under the Loggia overlooking the lake and dinner follows in the Guthrie Pavilion (wedding brochure). Ceremonies are booked with Tunbridge Wells register office and conducted by the Kent Registration Service.

Our studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood Hills HA6 1NU, photographing weddings since 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 580+ Google reviews. Hever publishes a recommended suppliers list but says couples are free to source their own for any service apart from catering, fireworks and marquees, and we are glad to photograph at Hever Castle. Coverage starts from £750. Hever is a long drive from Northwood, so travel is set out in the written quote before you book. Below is what the castle publishes, and what it does not.

What a Hever Castle wedding costs in 2027

Hever publishes separate facility fees for each setting, all including VAT. For the Astor Wing in 2027 (2027 Astor Wing and Castle fees PDF):

  • High season (May to September and December): Sunday to Thursday £5,500, Friday £6,750, Saturday £8,000.
  • Low season (January to April, October and November): Sunday to Thursday £5,000, Friday £5,500, Saturday £6,500.
  • Upgrading to a Castle ceremony or a Castle wedding breakfast adds £1,000; both together add £1,500. Castle upgrades are only on certain dates and times.
  • A three-course menu with tea and coffee is £100 per person, and drinks packages start at £55 per person.

For the Italian Garden in 2027 (2027 Italian Garden fees PDF):

  • High season, April to October (ceremony and reception): Sunday to Thursday £7,450, Friday £9,450, Saturday £11,550.
  • Low season, November to March (reception only): Sunday to Thursday £4,750, Friday £5,500, Saturday £6,000.
  • Italian Garden catering follows the same rates: £100 per person for three courses with tea and coffee, and drinks from £55 per person.

Accommodation is part of the arithmetic. For exclusive use of the Astor Wing, 12 of its 17 bedrooms must be booked; for an Italian Garden wedding all nine Anne Boleyn Wing rooms must be booked if you want accommodation, and any rooms guests have not taken eight weeks before are charged to the wedding account (Italian Garden FAQs). Italian Garden payments run as a £2,000 non-refundable booking fee, £5,000 nine months before, £5,000 six months before, and the balance two months before. Ceremony fees are paid separately to the register office.

Ceremonies in the Castle, the Astor Wing or on the Loggia

Kent County Council has licensed Hever Castle for civil marriages and civil partnerships. Once your deposit is paid, Hever reserves the registrars with Tunbridge Wells register office, who then contact you to take their own deposit and arrange notice of marriage (Astor Wing and Castle FAQs). The registrars will discuss music, as no religious content is allowed in a civil ceremony.

Tudor Suite ceremonies can take place on any day of the year between 10am and 8pm, except 25 and 26 December. Castle ceremonies in the Inner Hall depend on visitor opening times: the brochure gives availability from 6.30pm on days the Castle is open to the public and from midday when it is closed. On the Loggia, every ceremony is at 4.30pm, which the FAQ says "is not negotiable" (Italian Garden FAQs). Hever also offers ceremony-only weddings in the Tudor Suite and, April to October, on the Loggia.

Dancing is not permitted in the Castle or the Astor Wing because of the nature of the buildings, so an evening party with dancing moves to the Guthrie Pavilion or a sailcloth marquee or tipi on the lawns. Catering must come from Hever Castle Culinary. Hever does not publish anything about Hindu, Sikh or Muslim ceremonies, a mandap, or specialist Asian menus; the FAQ says the same menu must be chosen for the whole party with a vegetarian or vegan option. Ask the weddings team in writing before you plan a religious ceremony or a menu beyond that.

No confetti, no drones without approval: Hever's rules

Hever is a visitor attraction, and its visitor FAQ says pre-wedding or wedding day photography is not permitted without prior written permission (visitor FAQs). On a booked wedding day, the FAQs set out where photographs can happen and how other events affect them.

Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.

Getting ready in the Astor Wing or the Anne Boleyn Wing

For Astor Wing and Castle weddings, the wedding party may check in to up to three bedrooms from midday; other rooms are from 3pm (Astor Wing and Castle FAQs). Separate changing rooms can be booked at £175 per room. For Italian Garden weddings, accommodation is the nine-room Anne Boleyn Wing, and the wedding party may check in to one bedroom from midday (Italian Garden FAQs). Bedrooms have antique furnishings, panelled walls and leaded windows, with some four-poster beds (wedding brochure). Which rooms suit getting-ready photographs for each side of the family is not published, so ask when you allocate bedrooms.

Planning photographs at the Castle, the moat and the Italian Garden

  • The Italian Garden brochure page says the drinks reception is the moment for your photographer to take "iconic Castle shots" of the couple in front of the Castle, subject to the Event Manager.
  • The Loggia's arched columns look across the 38-acre lake, and the stone piazza has a Trevi-inspired fountain; the walk to the Guthrie Pavilion runs through the Rose Garden.
  • The Guthrie Pavilion has vaulted ceilings and full-length arched windows, which Hever describes as light and airy from day into night.
  • Inside the Castle, the Inner Hall has wood-panelled walls, carved columns and a staircase gallery, and the Great Hall has a minstrels' gallery and a carved stone fireplace.
  • The Tudor Suite has leaded windows and views of the Castle, moat and gardens; its private lawns overlook the Castle for drinks in fine weather.
  • Confetti and petals are banned, so plan the exit shot around bubbles or another alternative agreed with the coordinator, or sparklers outside after dark.
  • Wheelchair access to the Loggia is via the Rose Garden to the top level only, with no access to the lower terrace, which matters for where older guests stand in group photographs.

From a 1383 castle to Astor's restoration

Hever's history page dates the original castle, with its gatehouse and walled bailey, to 1383 (history). In the 15th and 16th centuries it belonged to the Boleyn family, and it was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife. It later passed to Anne of Cleves. From 1903 William Waldorf Astor restored the castle, built the Tudor Village now called the Astor Wing, created the lake, and laid out the Italian Garden to display his collection of statuary. The Astor Wing's craftsmen used traditional Tudor tools, according to the wedding brochure.

Hever station, Edenbridge and the M25

Hever Castle is off the B2026 between Sevenoaks and East Grinstead, about three miles south-east of Edenbridge (satnav TN8 7NG). It is signposted from junctions 5 and 6 of the M25 and from the Hildenborough exit of the A21 (directions). Coaches should check the route because of low bridges, and the Italian Garden FAQ says double-decker buses and coaches are not allowed on the narrow lane.

By train, Hever station is closest, about a mile on foot following red and white posts, but it is unmanned with no taxis. Edenbridge Town (trains from London Victoria and London Bridge) and Edenbridge (trains via Tonbridge or Redhill) are each about three miles away, so book taxis in advance. We travel to Hever Castle from our Northwood studio; travel is set out in the written quote.

Parking at Hever Castle for wedding guests

Parking is free, and Astor Wing and Castle guests have a car park free of charge during their stay (Astor Wing and Castle FAQs). Italian Garden guests are signposted to the Lakeview Car Park, not the main entrance, and are not admitted to the garden before 3pm. No overnight parking is allowed in the main or Lakeview car parks for non-residents, and guests at a church service at St Peter's, Hever, must move cars to the Lakeview Car Park afterwards (Italian Garden FAQs).

Hever Castle wedding photography, frequently asked questions

How much does a Hever Castle wedding cost?

Hever publishes facility fees including VAT. In 2027 the Astor Wing is £5,000 to £8,000 depending on season and day, with £1,000 or £1,500 extra to use the Castle for the ceremony, the meal or both. An Italian Garden wedding runs from £7,450 (Sunday to Thursday) to £11,550 (Saturday) between April and October, and £4,750 to £6,000 for a reception only from November to March. Food and drink is extra: The three-course menu is £100 per person in both settings, plus drinks packages.

How many guests can you have at a Hever Castle wedding?

It depends on the setting. The Castle Inner Hall and the Tudor Suite Sitting Room each take 48 seated and 12 standing for a ceremony; the Castle dining room seats 40 and the Tudor Suite Dining Room 60. The Italian Garden is the larger option: 180 for a Loggia ceremony, 150 to 180 seated in the Guthrie Pavilion, and 220 in the evening. Minimum numbers apply: 25 adults for the Astor Wing and Castle, and 60, 80 or 100 adults for the Italian Garden depending on the day.

Can you have confetti at Hever Castle?

No. Both wedding FAQs say confetti, rose petals and rice are not permitted anywhere on the estate, including confetti cannons, and a £2,000 clean-up fee is added if they are used. Standard handheld sparklers are allowed outside with the coordinator's agreement. Fireworks are possible only for Italian Garden weddings, through Hever's supplier, fired at 10pm Monday to Saturday for up to ten minutes.

What time do Hever Castle weddings finish?

For Astor Wing and Castle weddings, carriages are at midnight for non-residential guests, and residents can use a self-service bar until 2am. For Italian Garden weddings the bar closes at 12.30am, the last dance is at 12.45am and carriages are at 1am, with a £150 per hour charge for later departure. A shuttle takes Anne Boleyn Wing residents back from the Guthrie Pavilion until 1.15am, because the gardens are locked.

Can I bring my own photographer to Hever Castle?

Yes. Hever's FAQs say couples are free to source their own suppliers for any service, and only catering, fireworks and marquees must use Hever's own team or suppliers. The visitor FAQ says wedding or pre-wedding photography needs prior written permission, so a pre-wedding shoot on a normal visiting day should be agreed in writing. Drones need Hever's approval and CAA paperwork at least a week before.

Where do Hever Castle wedding ceremonies take place?

There are three options. Castle weddings marry in the panelled Castle Inner Hall and dine in the Great Hall. Astor Wing weddings marry in the Tudor Suite Sitting Room overlooking the moat, or on the Tudor Suite Lawns for up to 60. Italian Garden weddings marry at 4.30pm under the Loggia overlooking the lake, between April and October. All are civil ceremonies with the Kent Registration Service, booked through Tunbridge Wells register office.

Can we have an Asian wedding at Hever Castle?

Hever does not publish anything specific about Asian weddings, religious ceremonies or a mandap. What it does publish matters for planning: catering is in-house only, the same menu is chosen for the whole party with a vegetarian or vegan option, ceremonies are civil with no religious content, and the largest setting holds 180 for dinner and 220 in the evening. Ask the weddings team in writing about anything beyond that.

What is the nearest station to Hever Castle?

Hever station is about a mile's walk, following red and white wooden posts, but it is unmanned and has no taxis. Edenbridge Town and Edenbridge stations are about three miles away, so book a taxi in advance for both legs. By car the castle is signposted from junctions 5 and 6 of the M25, and the satnav postcode is TN8 7NG.
