For couple portraits we would suggest a short, relaxed walk, perhaps by the River Derwent near the Silk Mill or in Derby Arboretum, which is often described as Britain's first public park. Derby Register Office now sits in Riverside Chambers, a restored 1930s building on the corner of Full Street and Derwent Street, and whether you marry there, in a church or at a licensed venue such as the Museum of Making, we would photograph the whole day as it unfolds. Five European Kodak Gold Awards reflect the kind of control that matters on the day, such as exposing a bright doorway exit correctly first time instead of repairing it afterwards. Normanton has the largest concentration of Derby's British Asian community, and the Grand River Suite, the Derbyshire County Cricket Club ground and Osmaston Park near Ashbourne are all built for numbers rather than intimacy. That changes the approach: the priority becomes covering a very big room properly, then extracting the couple for a short, purposeful portrait session. Markeaton Park, the city's most visited park, has a lake and enough open parkland for exactly that, and it is the sensible outdoor option when a venue's own grounds are limited. Derby Cathedral, whose 212-foot tower was built between 1510 and 1532, is the landmark of the city centre. Derby station is on the Midland Main Line and is also served by CrossCountry trains, which helps guests travelling from further afield for a morning ceremony.

Send a running order over a fortnight ahead and both stop being problems.
