Large celebrations are the norm in a city with a long established South Asian community around Normanton, and the Grand River Suite, The Incora County Ground and Osmaston Park are all built for numbers rather than intimacy. That changes the approach: the priority becomes covering a very big room properly, then extracting the couple for a short, purposeful portrait session. Markeaton Park, the city's most visited park, has a lake and enough open parkland for exactly that, and it is the sensible outdoor option when a venue's own grounds are limited. Derby Cathedral, with its tall 16th century tower, is the strongest piece of architecture in the centre. It is conversation, not guesswork, and it happens well before anybody books a car. Some days the emotional centre of it all sits inside a congregation's own building. On others it is a meal, an arrival, or a departure somewhere close to midnight.

Etiquette is what varies, and we ask instead of guessing. Where may we stand, is flash acceptable, should anyone be kept out of pictures entirely, is there a point at which cameras stop. None of it is difficult once settled beforehand, and every part is awkward if first raised in front of a full room. Expectations shift building by building, a cathedral no less than a hired hall, and nobody minds being asked in advance.

We photograph anyway. Rain gives kinder light than midday sun and umbrellas photograph well. Groups move to covered ground inside your Derby venue, and you two step outside for a few minutes if you are game.

We are not used to being photographed. Will you direct us?+

Yes, and lightly. Being handed a task beats being handed a pose, because holding still self consciously is exactly what makes people look wooden. Ten minutes in, most couples have stopped noticing the lens at all.

Do you film video as well as photography?+

We can bring in a filmmaker alongside the photography, booked through us so there is one contact and one timeline. Two teams introduced to each other on a wedding morning will trip over one another all day.
