Leaning in over the register, the couple and the imam are caught in that concentrated moment when the marriage is written down.
Cars and convoys matter more than people expect. The decorated car waiting for the rukhsati and the family loading it are part of the story, so we cover the departure properly. Rukhsati is the hardest event to photograph well. We take a position near the door early, use a long lens and let the family say goodbye without a camera pushed into it. Moving at its own gentle pace, the mehndi evening gives us the yellow and green of the outfits, the flower jewellery and the anticipation building through the songs.
