We shoot the getting-ready hours as a story of anticipation, from the jewellery going on to the last look in the mirror before the ceremony. A female photographer is available for the getting-ready hours and any moments where the women of the family would prefer a woman behind the camera. The mehndi and sangeet are where families let go, so we shoot loose and candid there, catching the laughter, the songs and the henna drying on open hands.

From the kanyadaan to the saptapadi, or the first laav to the last, the ceremony tells its own story and we follow it. We know the order of the rituals in each tradition, so we are always in position. We learn the sequence of your particular ceremony beforehand, so whether it is Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati or Tamil, we anticipate each ritual rather than chase it.

The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance and the bhangra. The dhol and dancing of the baraat are pure joy, and we capture every bit of the energy. The dhol player sets the pulse of the baraat, and we work close to the drum and the dancers so the picture carries the sound within it.
