We photograph the four laavan, ardas and kirtan with heads covered and shoes off, and never frame the Guru Granth Sahib as decoration. Montpellier Gardens, part of Cheltenham's Regency landscape, suits portraits with the choora and kalire before langar and the doli. The first half of your day happens inside a building that will not be rearranged to suit a camera, and that fact is the morning's whole brief. No stand goes up, no sightline gets cleared, no elevated spot is available to borrow. So we read the hall within minutes of arriving, settle on two places at its edge, and let focal length do the walking for us. Nothing we carry may sit higher than the Guru Granth Sahib.
Come the evening, the room belongs to you again, and couples underestimate how complete that switch is. Nothing carried over from the morning still applies. We rebuild the kit between the two, usually in a car park, usually at speed. Some of your guests will arrive off the trains at Cheltenham Spa and others off the motorway, so the transfer swallows more time than the schedule admits. Leave slack in it.

Milni happens outdoors, the only stretch of the morning with room to work: two sides pairing off, embraces that last a beat, a semicircle of relatives watching. Inside, kirtan is long and it is quiet, and we take very little during it on purpose. We move once, at the palla, and then hold. From any single spot, four laavan produce four near-identical pictures, so the difference lives in whatever else the frame contains.
We take the musicians on one circuit, then the parents, then hands, then the width of the hall on the last. Ardas brings everybody upright and deserves a frame wide enough to show how full the place is. Langar is seated and low, photographed from a crouch or not at all. Hardest of the lot is the doli, which is dark, crowded and genuinely upsetting, and shoving a camera into that is precisely the wrong instinct. We stay back and let the longer lens do it.
