Baraat arrivals with the dhol, the milni, the laavan before the Guru Granth Sahib and the langar that follows are all covered, and for portraits afterwards we would suggest Gheluvelt Park, off Barbourne Road and running down to the Severn, with its duck pond and bandstand. Video crews, planners, decorators and DJs share the day with us, so we agree beforehand with each of them who stands where, in the darbar hall and at the Worcester reception, and nobody blocks anybody. Second photographers, engagement shoots and archival albums designed spread by spread are all available, and travel from Northwood to Worcestershire or any other part of the UK and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.
Sangat, kirtan and the four laavan of the anand karaj would draw a Worcester couple away from the city for the morning, with heads covered and shoes off and coverage kept respectful throughout. Worcester Guildhall then makes an unusually handsome reception room. Bank House Hotel is the practical alternative. Cripplegate Park beside the River Severn takes the couple's portraits, and Evesham, Pershore and Upton upon Severn hold the visiting families.

From the darbar hall to a Worcester reception
Two halves, two entirely different problems. Through the morning nothing is ours to control: lighting is whatever the hall already carries overhead, our position is whatever space is left, and nothing is fired. By evening almost everything is ours. Producing one gallery from both halves is the real job, and it starts by matching the morning rather than trying to correct it afterwards, which never quite works.
Choosing the evening room is a freedom the morning does not give you. High civic ceilings hand you a bounce surface and no discreet corner for a light stand; a lower country ceiling comes within reach but shortens the sightlines underneath it. Rooms to weigh include Worcester Guildhall, The Wood Norton, Bank House Hotel and Eckington Manor, and the drive from the first place to the second belongs on the timetable, not in the margin beside it.

Milni, laavan, langar and doli
The congregation sits at floor height, every eyeline with it, so anyone standing becomes an intrusion before a frame has been taken. We stay low, move seldom, and pick a spot that will still work twenty minutes on, because getting up again is conspicuous. Overhead lighting is fixed and even; nothing carried in would improve on it, and nothing fires. The laavan is four passes of one circuit, which is the morning's single gift: four attempts at the same picture from four positions, provided those positions were chosen early.
Milni happens in whatever weather arrives and consists largely of embracing at chest height on a forecourt, so it wants a step back and some reach. Langar is rows of seated people and steam, and the honest frame sits at their level rather than above their shoulders. Doli ends things, and like any departure it belongs to a focal length longer than instinct suggests.

For a large Sikh wedding, Bank House at Bransford has the stand-alone Elgar Suite, licensed for ceremonies of up to 400, and Gheluvelt Park, running down to the Severn off Barbourne Road, would suit an unhurried portrait walk; capacities and times do change, so check them with each venue. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.
