We know the order of the anand karaj well after twenty five years, so we are already in place when the palla is draped, the laavan start and the ardas brings everyone to their feet. Escorting the bride into the darbar hall is a slow, charged walk, and we work ahead of it from the side aisle so the arrival is covered without a lens ever facing the Guru Granth Sahib. We photograph the ardas from the back of the hall, the whole sangat standing together, a wide and reverent frame that shows the community gathered around your marriage.
When the baraat reaches the gurdwara gates, we photograph the dancing peaking, the family spilling out to receive it and the groom arriving to the loudest welcome of his life. Nanke mel arriving is an event in itself, the maternal family coming in together with gifts and noise, and we cover the welcome at the door because that greeting sets the tone of the day. Late in the evening the formal wear loosens, the elders go home and the dance floor becomes something else entirely, and we stay for it, since the best frames often come after eleven.

From the sehra bandi to the send off
Departure from the house is a small ceremony of its own, the blessing at the door, the last look back, the cars filling up, and we cover it before following on to the gurdwara. Sisters are usually the ones holding the morning together, and we photograph them working, because in twenty years they will want proof of how much of the day they carried.
Langar after the ceremony is photographed with permission and with restraint, the rows seated together, the sewadars serving, the equality of the hall visible in a single frame. Dhol at the reception door changes the whole room's energy, and we shoot low and wide there, catching the drummers and the crowd rather than an isolated portrait of the couple.
