If the anand karaj means travelling to a gurdwara and back, Huntingdon's position on the East Coast Main Line and beside the A1 and A14 does a lot of work. Inside the darbar hall the camera is seated and to the side, shoes off, head covered, nothing framed above the Guru Granth Sahib. The palla, the four laavan, the ardas and the sikhia each pass once. Huntingdon Racecourse then takes the evening and the doli. Brampton, Hartford and Buckden keep local family close.

Two buildings hold your day and they behave nothing alike. The first is an institution, arranged the way it has always been arranged, and a wedding will not move any of it. The second is a hall you have taken for the evening, where seating, timings and most of the light fall under your control. The darbar hall, then the reception room
Inside the hall the constraint is not a preference and nobody negotiates it. The camera works from where it is told to work, at the level of everyone else, and one part of that room is simply unavailable as a background. This is no hardship. It removes the choices that slow other photographers down, and what is left over happens to be the only material worth having, which is the faces of two families watching. Finding those angles before the seats fill is why we arrive so early.
Four passes, one handing of the palla, no rehearsal whatsoever: such is the anand karaj from behind a camera. Positions are settled beforehand and then kept, and a slightly poorer angle is preferable to moving during a laav. Afterwards the day inverts. The reception and the doli at close of play happen in rooms you control, and there we can light, block and wait.

Riverside Park runs for 2 km along the Great Ouse from near the Old Bridge Hotel, and Hinchingbrooke Country Park adds 150 acres of woodland and lakes, so either would work for a short portrait walk after the laavan. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.
