We bring a long lens and a light touch, so the four laavan are captured from the sides of the gurdwara at a respectful distance. We keep the calm of the kirtan and the exuberance of the reception in equal measure. We let the Anand Karaj unfold at its own pace and meet the four laavan with a quiet, watchful eye.

Cambridge is a historic university city on the River Cam known for its ancient colleges. Cambridge railway station connects to London King's Cross and Liverpool Street, with the M11 and A14 nearby. When there is time for couple portraits, The Backs, the riverside college lawns and gardens along the River Cam is a favourite, and King's College Chapel with its late Gothic fan vaulting makes a memorable setting.

Knowing the order of your day

For families holding a Sri Akhand Path, we photograph the continuous reading with quiet reverence. We are ready for the palla, when the bride's father places the sash in the couple's hands before the laavan. We know the order of the Anand Karaj by heart, from the kirtan to the ardaas and the four laavan.

The kaleere tied to the bride's choora carry their own meaning, and we photograph the ritual with care. We document the sagai and the engagement that begin the journey, when families ask us. We capture the family moments around the bride and groom, not just the rituals.
