Kaushik Bathia is an award winning wedding photographer based in London, with over twenty five years and more than a thousand celebrations behind him, and travels to Cambridge and throughout Cambridgeshire. We would sooner wait for an expression than ask for one, which keeps even a walk along The Backs, where the college grounds run down to the River Cam, feeling warm and natural. A chapel service, a civil ceremony in the Brooke Room at the Cambridgeshire Register Office on Ascham Road, or a country house wedding in the walled rose garden at Madingley Hall: whatever the setting or faith, we would photograph the day as it unfolds. Timings do change, and we would adjust quietly, whether speeches in the Ballroom at the University Arms overrun or Madingley Hall needs turning round for an evening reception of up to 150. We also offer engagement shoots, perhaps beside the River Cam on Jesus Green or on Parker's Piece by the 1893 lamp known as Reality Checkpoint, along with a second photographer and fine art albums; we travel from Northwood, and travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.
College weddings ask more of a photographer than hotel weddings do. Light inside a college chapel falls a very long way before it reaches faces, so ceremony coverage there is about fast lenses and restraint. Colleges such as Trinity Hall enclose their own courts, which means portraits can be made within a few minutes' walk of the ceremony and the timeline stays intact. The Backs, the riverside college lawns and gardens along the River Cam, are the obvious late afternoon walk for couple pictures. Madingley Hall sits further out, so allow driving time. Guests arriving at Cambridge or Cambridge North stations, or by road, can converge in a rush, and a second photographer is worth considering purely to cover that.

Only a room can hold a licence. A building cannot, a garden cannot, and neither can the view you booked the place for. Paperwork therefore chooses your ceremony space before taste is consulted, and the licensed one turns out again and again to be whichever space has the smallest windows. Establish which room that is before committing to the lawn it happens to overlook. Between those two lies a whole grade of light, and it is better found out early.
Everything after that is enclosure. A walled lawn works like a studio with one wall removed: soft, directional, and cool, because stone gives back cool light. Groups look well in it. A white dress does not, unless somebody corrects for the colour before anything is printed. Riverside gardens are the alternative once the afternoon has moved on, and the honest question is whether your registrar's timings leave room for either.

What binds you legally takes almost no time at all. Declarations, contracting words, a signature each, and the marriage exists, frequently in less time than seating everybody consumed. Your registrar decides the camera's position, and that decision comes in the room itself, not weeks earlier over email. We therefore plan on three or four frames from one fixed spot and spend our effort elsewhere in the day. Coverage sold around the ceremony misreads the shape of an afternoon.
A church wedding inverts that. It runs longer, people move about, clergy set their own terms, and those terms leave room to work provided they reach you early. Either way the day's photographic weight lands in the receiving line, where every guest passes one point and can be caught once properly, and in the speeches, where the pictures are on the listening faces rather than the speaker. The first dance is brief, dark, and worth lighting on purpose.
