College weddings ask more of a photographer than hotel weddings do. Light inside King's College Chapel, with its late Gothic fan vaulting, falls a very long way before it reaches faces, so ceremony coverage there is about fast lenses and restraint. Trinity Hall, Jesus College and Downing College each enclose their own courts, which means portraits can be made within a few minutes' walk of the ceremony and the timeline stays intact. The Backs, the riverside college lawns and gardens along the River Cam, are the obvious late afternoon walk for couple pictures. Madingley Hall sits further out, so allow driving time. Guests arriving at Cambridge station from London King's Cross or Liverpool Street, or by the M11 and A14, tend to converge in a rush, and a second photographer is worth considering purely to cover that. We therefore plan on three or four frames from one fixed spot and spend our effort elsewhere in the day. Coverage sold around the ceremony misreads the shape of an afternoon.

A church wedding inverts that. It runs longer, people move about, clergy set their own terms, and those terms leave room to work provided they reach you early. Either way the day's photographic weight lands in the receiving line, where every guest passes one point and can be caught once properly, and in the speeches, where the pictures are on the listening faces rather than the speaker. The first dance is brief, dark, and worth lighting on purpose.

How long do the formal family photos take?+

It is governed by the number of groups on your list, not by how big each one is. Allow a couple of minutes apiece once people have been found, and give one relative per family the job of finding them.

Can you work with our other suppliers on the day?+

Yes, and contact gets made in the weeks before, rather than while everyone is arriving. Florists, planners, bands and caterers each have moments they need photographed, and knowing those early keeps us all out of one another's frames.

How do you edit and retouch photos for Cambridge weddings?+

Colour comes first: we neutralise the room, then grade skin, then fabric. Retouching stays light, so blemishes and stray hair go and faces do not. Nothing about Cambridge changes that, and no filter is applied across a gallery.
