Before anybody raises the subject of light, hand us a plan of the rooms. Which part of the building holds the men, which holds the women, and whether a camera may cross the doorway dividing them. It is a permission rather than a preference, and it either exists in advance or it does not exist. Where it does not, part of the day will go unphotographed, and it is far better to know that in advance.
Cambridge adds a second rulebook, because a ceremony at one address and a dinner inside a college hall are governed separately. Ask each of them, early and in writing, who may be photographed in which room, and whether the same answer covers guests holding phones. Six weeks out that conversation is easy. On the morning, with relatives arriving off trains and the room filling, it is the worst one you can be having.

The nikah, the mehndi and the walima, hour by hour
A nikah is brief and almost entirely spoken, which means the photographs are mostly not of the couple. While the imam speaks, the faces worth watching belong to the mothers, the brothers and the witnesses, and a camera pointed only forward will miss every one of them. During recitation ours comes down; that needs no instruction. Witnessing and signing the nikah-nama produces the single genuinely awkward frame of the day, a crowded table, and it works if you photograph hands and a pen instead of shoulders.
Around that core the day spreads out. Mangni and mehndi happen in low, coloured light where hands matter more than faces and flash would flatten the henna. A walima is a room of large groups, and it wants room to back away more than it wants clever lighting. Rukhsati is the quickest thing on the schedule, usually at a door, often after dark and under two sorts of bulb. You cannot arrive for it. You have to be standing outside before it begins.
