Early starts are usual, and through a Cambridgeshire winter that means arriving in the dark. Preparations at home run on table lamps and one bathroom window. The ceremony then runs on whatever is already fixed to the ceiling above it. By evening we bring our own. Three separate problems inside twelve hours, and you should see none of them: only one continuous day, evenly lit.

So the morning is documentary and the evening is production. Nothing is rearranged at the gurdwara; nothing is left unarranged at the reception. Between the two comes the turnaround, while a hall is reset from lunch to dinner, and nobody else has a claim on that stretch. Put your portraits there. Once guests are seated again, every hour ahead has been spoken for by somebody, and the couple is seldom the somebody in question. Make that clear when you book.

Milni, laavan and doli in Peterborough

Whatever the room already is, that is what you get. Sightlines were settled when the place was built, the congregation is on the floor and so are we, and standing up to improve an angle is not on offer. That constraint is the entire brief for the morning. We work low, we work quietly, and the handful of positions we use gets picked in advance, because shifting mid-laavan means walking through the sangat. The moment a palla changes hands is the frame every family asks for, and it is available from precisely one side.

Milni happens outside and earlier, in daylight, two families meeting on a forecourt. Nothing else is that loose, and nothing is likelier to be missed by a photographer still assembling kit. The doli at the close reverses it. Everybody knows the cars are coming and nobody wants a lens inside them, so we stay back, work long, and shoot fewer frames there than anywhere else.
