A Sikh wedding in Northampton is really two commissions that share a date. Inside a gurdwara the terms are not ours to set: you sit where everyone else sits, the available light is all the light there will be, and other people, not us, decide from where a camera may work. Later you hire a room, and inside a hired room every one of those variables belongs to you. Two halves, two methods.

What separates the halves is the part that gets underestimated. Two buildings mean a journey, and a journey planned on best case timings eats the portrait window at the far end. Tell us the hour the cars will honestly leave. Country estate venues stand outside the built-up streets, so an afternoon transfer is normal here and has to sit in the schedule from the beginning, not surface once the stationery has gone to print. Near Northampton that means venues such as Sedgebrook Hall, Whittlebury Park and Rushton Hall.

Getting the milni pairings right

Milni is outdoors, on foot, in whatever the county weather is doing, and it consists of pairs of relatives who are often strangers to each other. Getting it right is a research problem rather than an optical one, so send the pairings beforehand and no senior figure ends up shot from behind. Arrival is different again. The baraat moves, sings, and comes at you with the sun behind it, and nothing about it will slow down, so we photograph it walking, facing the front rank.

Then the whole room is down on the carpet, cameras included. Working height for the whole ceremony is fixed by that, and a tripod becomes close to useless. We stay to the sides and the rear, quiet, on long focal lengths. Four circuits repeat one geometry four times over, so we change corner between them instead of producing four copies of a single picture. The palla wants a tighter distance than the singing does. Langar afterwards is not filler, and it does not get photographed as filler.

We are having an Anand Karaj and a civil ceremony. Can you cover both?+

Both, and each is its own commission. A congregation runs its ceremony by its own conventions, a registrar runs one by the clock. Send both dates and both addresses, and the pair get booked together.

Will you stay to photograph the doli?+

Yes. It is generally where the day ends emotionally, and packing up before it leaves the story unfinished. Should it slip beyond the hours agreed, we stay with it until the car has gone.

Who will actually be behind the camera at our wedding?+

Whoever you met when you booked. There is no anonymous substitution on the morning, and if your day is big enough to want another camera, that person is named to you in advance.

How soon after the wedding will we see any photos?+

Previews arrive in the opening week, picked while everything is still fresh. The complete set takes considerably longer, since colour is corrected frame by frame, and we commit to a date for it when you book.

How do you organise the family group photographs?+

Build the list with us in advance, then give one confident relative the job of finding people. Names on paper, read out in order, turns a scattered half hour into a calm ten minutes.
