For portraits away from the celebration, Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, the largest area of ancient woodland in Greater London works beautifully, and Ruislip Lido, a nineteenth century reservoir with a sandy beach and miniature railway adds a real sense of place.

The mandapam, the homam and the thali

We anticipate the muhurtham, the auspicious hour that sets the pace of the whole ceremony. We are ready for the moment the thali, the mangalsutra, is tied around the bride's neck. The oonjal, the gentle swing ceremony with its songs and warding off of the evil eye, is a moment we capture with warmth.

We photograph the bridal preparations, the draping of the Kanjeevaram silk and the jasmine in the hair, with a gentle eye. The paalikai, when the seed pots are prepared, is a quiet, lovely ritual we cover with a gentle eye. The oonjal swing, the singing and the rice balls offered to the couple are full of family warmth.
