Your ceremony might be in the Merchants Suite, the bright triple-aspect room at Merchants House on Crook Street, home of Chester Register Office, at Chester Town Hall or at a castle such as Peckforton Castle, and whatever the setting or tradition we would photograph the whole day as it happens. When a plan changes at short notice, a shower just before portraits in Grosvenor Park for instance, we stay calm, keep the mood light and quietly work around it. You can add an engagement shoot, a second photographer and hand-finished albums, and we travel across Cheshire and beyond, with travel and any overnight stay quoted in writing before you book.

Whether you marry in Chester itself or out in Cheshire, at Old Palace Chester, Peckforton Castle or Crabwall Manor Hotel, your licence chooses the room before anything else. A ceremony that has to be registered happens where it is permitted to happen, and that room is not reliably the handsome one; often it is the one with least daylight and most chairs. Ask which room is licensed, then ask to stand in it at your ceremony time. A west-facing room as the sun drops, and that same room mid-morning, are not one photographic proposition.
The registrar's part of it is brief; some guests are still settling when it ends. Most of the day's story therefore happens around it: the getting-ready hour, the drinks afterwards, the toasts, the dancing. We plan for that imbalance, and agree the group list beforehand so the time after the ceremony is spent photographing people instead of hunting for them.

Opposite demands come from a church and from a licensed room. Stone buildings give you height, depth and coloured light through glass, but tend to fix us in one position and rule out movement during the vows, so frames there are decided beforehand and then simply taken. A hired room hands back the freedom to move and removes the light, leaving tungsten, a projector screen and a fire door. Neither is worse. Knowing which you have, a fortnight beforehand, is what counts, because the plan differs completely.
After that the day is mostly people. Everybody files past you once during a receiving line, so it doubles as a portrait queue if you let it. Speeches are photographed by watching listeners instead of the speaker, since the reaction carries the picture. A first dance is a dark room holding two moving subjects, and one small light placed behind them beats any amount of sensitivity.
