Some stand inside the Roman walls: old, small-windowed, and impossible to extend for a longer guest list. Others sit out in Cheshire farmland with grounds attached and nobody next door. A nikah does not look like much through a lens: a table, a pen, a handful of people leaning in. The photograph worth having is rarely the signature but the half-minute afterwards, when the room decides how it feels. So we point the camera at the watchers as often as at the nikah-nama, and agree beforehand which relatives have to be inside that frame. When recitation begins the camera comes down. Any shutter is audible once a room goes quiet, and it will land on somebody's video.
The evenings either side are separate work. A mehndi is close-range and slow, hands and colour under lamps somebody else chose, and one light of our own beats a faster lens there. A walima inverts that: a big room, a long table and a queue, and the job becomes moving people about without appearing to. Portraits are better taken before the guests are seated, because afterwards you will not get either of you alone for ten minutes. The rukhsati ends things, and wants distance rather than intrusion.
