At a smaller venue such as Erasmus Darwin House, whose two licensed rooms hold ceremonies for up to 30 guests, a calm and unobtrusive photographer matters, and that is how we work. Lichfield Registration Office, in the 1856 Old Library Building on Bird Street beside Beacon Park, has a chandelier-lit ceremony room holding 50 people including the couple, registrars and photographer, so for a register office wedding there we would agree positions before the day. More photographs are not better photographs, so a Lichfield wedding gallery is edited tightly, to around six hundred frames rather than an unfiltered three thousand. You can add an engagement shoot, perhaps by the fountain in Beacon Park's Museum Gardens, a second photographer for a barn day at Coton House Farm in Whittington, or hand finished albums.
Three spires make Lichfield Cathedral the only medieval English cathedral of its kind, and they also make it a difficult subject to compress into one photograph without losing the couple inside it. The answer is usually distance and a longer lens rather than a wide one. Beacon Park and the adjoining Minster Pool and Museum Gardens bring water, reflection and a settled backdrop to the group photographs. This is a small cathedral city, the birthplace of the writer Samuel Johnson, so the walk between ceremony and portraits is short and worth using properly. Coton House Farm sits outside the centre.
