Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight. The muhurat and muhurtham, the auspicious hours, set the pace of the ceremony, and we plan around them. We are mindful of every family's customs at the ceremony, and photograph them exactly as they happen.

Preparations hold a quiet anticipation of their own, and we photograph the jewellery, the tying of the turban and the last still moments before the day begins. For Gujarati families the garba and raas fill an evening with circling colour and movement, and we love following the dandiya sticks and the swirling skirts. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it.
