The moment the imam pronounces the couple married, the room changes, and we are watching the faces of both families as the solemnity gives way to open joy.

When the two sides finally join for the walima, we are ready for it, having covered each separately, so the moment the families come together is photographed from the inside. We let the nikah unfold at its own pace and meet the rukhsati with a quiet, watchful eye. We keep our equipment discreet, favouring small cameras and available light, so the nikah feels like a ceremony rather than a photoshoot.

When there is time for couple portraits, Christ Church Meadow, the riverside meadow between the colleges and the Thames is a favourite, and The Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library in the heart of the university quarter makes a memorable setting.

From mehndi to walima

An imam leads the ceremony for some, a qazi for others, and we adapt to whichever your family keeps, following the order they set rather than one of our own. We take the time before the day to learn how your ceremony runs, so that when the mahr is agreed and the contract signed, we are ready rather than reacting. Held at home rather than the mosque, a nikah loses none of its weight, and we cover it in the living room with the same care we would bring to any masjid.

The mehndi, the dholki and the walima each carry their own mood, and we photograph them all. Nothing on the day is more tender than the rukhsati, when the bride leaves her parents' home, and we photograph the embraces and the tears from a gentle, respectful distance. The mehndi is a riot of colour and noise, henna drawn on the bride's hands while the music builds, and it often gives us the most joyful frames of the whole wedding.
