Three days rarely fit inside one building, and in Oxford they will not. A morning in a hall, an evening in a suite and an hour of portraits somewhere between them hand you three light sources and three ceiling heights. Colour, not composition, is what that costs. Left untreated the set breaks into three unrelated galleries with the same couple in each. Grading the whole week towards a single look is the fix, applied afterwards on purpose.

The second difference is where the pictures actually live. Ceremonies hold still on the timetable and largely photograph themselves. What families keep instead is the hour before any car arrives, cousins arguing in a corridor, a father with nothing left to organise and no idea what to do with himself. All of that happens in the gaps, which is exactly when a photographer is usually eating or swapping a lens. We stay out through the gaps and rest during the speeches.

Authority relocates from one of these days to the next. It might rest with a person, or with an institution whose building was never yours to arrange, or with a document waiting on a table. Locate it in advance and two things become obvious at once: whom to ask, and where the actual centre of the room lies. Guess wrong and you spend an entire ceremony behind somebody's shoulder, taking careful pictures of the wrong half of the floor.

For one family the week turns on a canopy. Somewhere else it turns on a hall that alters for nobody. For a third everything reduces to a signature witnessed twice. We do not arrive carrying a checklist covering all three, because no household practises all three, and a photographer reading from a generic list will photograph the wrong thing very carefully indeed. Instead we ask which single moment you would find it hardest to forgive us for missing, then build outward from that.

A long celebration is an endurance problem wearing the costume of a creative one. By the third evening the question stops being which lens and becomes whether anybody is still watching properly. We schedule our own rest for that reason, and we would sooner agree a shorter day with you than hand over a tired one.

Yes, and the practical part happens months beforehand. Both families are asked privately what would count for them as an intrusion. Those answers are seldom the same, and whichever proves more cautious becomes the rule for the entire week.

Documentary, in the main. We watch and wait rather than arrange, and the exceptions are the formal portraits your parents will want, which deserve doing properly and quickly. Nothing is ever staged for us twice.

Can you photograph a wedding at an Asian banqueting hall in Oxford?+

Certainly. Halls of that kind settle your ceiling height, your artificial colour and your sightlines before anybody walks in. The useful question in Oxford is therefore which of those fittings can be switched off, and ask it early.
